Often called “the strongest woman in the United States,” Cheryl Haworth is a competitive weight lifter who emerged in the late 1990s as a popular icon for women in sports. While still a teenager, she became national champion, junior world champion, and an Olympic medalist.

Episode at a Glance

In Episode 71 Coach Joe is joined by legendary weightlifter Cheryl Haworth to talk about the break off the floor during the olympic lifts. Before jumping into the topic at hand Cheryl catches us up on a couple of big life moves. The first one is the move from the good ole U.S. of A. to Hong Kong and the second is the move from being an athlete to primarily a coach.

After the catchup is over Cheryl & Joe start launching some knowledge bombs over the airwaves. The duo start by covering 4 errors during the break from the ground that can indicate if the lift is going to go well:  

Feet First: is the foot flat on the ground?

Second: Is the bar moving up and away from the knee or is it moving with the body?

Third: Are taking your time from the floor? Is the lifter being graceful, controlled and purposeful while keeping the bar accelerating WITHOUT YANKING on the bar?

Fourth: Back angle: if the butt/hips rise first changing the angle of the back, it’s a bad lift.

The conversation continues with Joe & Cheryl talking about corrective work and drills that help get the bar into the SSP (sex pocket pull).
