In Episode 87 of the Doc & Jock podcast Doc Danny Matta tackles a question from super fan Stacey about to prep the lower back and hips for lifting/crossfit.
Stacey writes in and asks “How do you think we should be incorporating things like Dead Bugs, 90/90 drills, Glute Activations into training?”
Danny’s prescription is this:
1st: Make sure you actually need these activation drills. If you are strong, but your mobility SUCKS you don’t need anymore stability.
2nd: Things like dead bugs, chops and lifts 90/90 breathing are a great thing to add into your warm up to get your hips & glutes TURNED on for the loaded movement for that day. From there you want to progress into some more dynamic movements like band pulls or good mornings. Once everything is turned on it’s time to start lifting. Gradually building into whatever weight you are using. Danny reiterates how important it is to follow up activation drills by actually doing the movement (deadlifts, squats…etc) that you are trying to get activated for.
3rd: Make sure your analyzing to see if these drills are making a difference. If they are not try other stability pieces to make the change you need.
