E93 | Shoulder Internal v. External Rotation On Lifts
Episode 93 – Should I internally or externally rotate my shoulders on overhead lifts?
In Episode 93 Coach Joe tackles a question from iTunes reviewer John. Our man John has heard some Chinese weightlifting coaches are cuing internal rotation on overhead lifts and then he has also heard guys like Kelly Starrett and Mike Burgener cuing external rotation, John boy wants to know which one is right.
Here are the broad stroke answers of how Coach Joe answers John:
1. No matter what, any rotation that causes loss of a neutral spine is bad rotation
2. Always show some armpit. There are no lifters that are completely internally rotated.
3. Twist the thumb away. Simple way to force active lats and scaps. Check out this video to get the visual on this concept.
4. Push your head through your arms to finish. Just like your head is a football and your arms are the uprights. Kick that sucker through.
Download the episode to hear all the dirty details on this and much more. If you lift this stuff is super important, weight over head with al dente pasta supporting it will lead to injuries.
