Navy SEAL Mobility
Episode 73: The Overhead Position & SEAL Training
Episode at a Glance
In Episode 73 Doc Danny sits down and answers a question from massive Doc & Jock fan Griff, who was kind enough to ask us via an iTunes review. Griff is prepping to be a Navy SEAL candidate and the volume of upper body pulling and pushing is leaving him pretty stiff in the upper body which caused him to ask “Doc Danny what are some things I can do to keep my upper body supple during selection?”
Danny answers with a good template that any overhead athlete can use to help keep themselves in the game.
#1. Internal Rotation: a lack of it puts the pec and anterior shoulder at a huge risk. Make sure you are always working on this. Banded distractions are the best bet and for a bad ass list of good ones check out Doc Danny’s YouTube page here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzbIpnafDLDvqCztuFkdsdQ/videos
#2. Is your Lat strong and active in your overhead positions? Danny mentions Rich Froning’s overhead position as one to watch. If you have ever seen Rich in the CrossFit games one thing you’ll notice is that no matter the event, the weight or the volume his position overhead is always the same. His mechanics never break down, and he is never nursing a bad shoulder. Why? Because Rich has a strong overhead position with strong lat engagement. If your lats are weak you need to get them strong. Danny recommends heavy Turkish get-ups and overhead KB carries as a way to get those lats firing and to develop a great position.
That’s pretty much it for E73 gang. If you have a question make sure to ask us via an iTunes review and we’ll get it in one of these Friday shorts. Thanks guys and remember..if you have a body, you’re an athlete.
